Westmoore High School senior Chason Brassfield started competing in track and field when he was 14 and in the eighth grade. Now in his final year of competing on the track, Brassfield said he has continued to improve and is hungry to help his team win.

“My strength is my start out of blocks. I have improved my hurdle form over every hurdle this season,” said Brassfield. 

The hurdle events are his specialty. Brassfield competes in the 110-hurdles and the 300-hurdles. One accomplishment he is proud of came from his peers on the team. 

“Becoming captain of the Westmoore track and field team is an accomplishment I am proud of,” Brassfield said. “It pushes me to continue working my hardest no matter what. My teammates always bring me up and cheer me on.”

Track is not his only activity. Brassfield is learning skills in the automotive field. A career he plans to pursue after high school.

“After graduation I plan to succeed in the automotive field as a technician,” said Brassfield. 

Being a student-athlete at WHS has helped develop a sense of pride in his work and an understanding that hard work pays off. 

“At Westmoore they are not just trying to make you the greatest athlete you can be but they are also trying to make you an upstanding person,” said Brassfield. 

Before every race, Brassfield said he likes to focus on the task at hand and see it as just another race on the schedule. He said he is grateful for coach Kappelle who pushes him to become better at what he does. 

“I try to imagine that every competition is another practice. I just need to do what I do in competition how I do it in practice,” said Brassfield. 

Away from school Brassfield said he enjoys spending time with his family and friends.
