Q&A with Westmoore’s Josiah Abshire – Presented by Gregory’s Sporting Goods

VYPE: Josiah, when did you start playing baseball?

Josiah Abshire: I first picked up a bat when I was three, but I didn’t actually start playing on a team until I was six.

VYPE: What position do you play and why do you love it?

JA: I play third base and also pitch. I enjoy third because of all the action that comes with playing the hot corner. But honestly, I love pitching even more. When I’m on the mound, I feel like I’m in control of the game and love leading my team.

VYPE: What does a typical week of training look like?

JA: A typical week usually means team practice six days a week, and I’m in the gym for four of those days too.

VYPE: How would you describe your team’s chemistry?

JA: Our team’s chemistry has been a huge part of our success this season. Most of us have been playing together or against each other since our little league days, so we’ve built a strong bond over the years.

VYPE: What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced as an athlete?

JA: The biggest challenge for me has definitely been the mental side of baseball. Dealing with pressure, bouncing back from mistakes, and staying confident through adversity can be tough.

VYPE: What’s been your favorite game or play so far?

JA: My favorite game this season was our run-rule win over Enid. They were a highly ranked team, and it was one of those games where our whole team came together and got the job done.

VYPE: What moment made you proud to be on the team?
JA: My favorite moment so far has been Ethan Workmans walk off hit against Noble.

VYPE: Do you want to play baseball after high school?

JA: I definitely want to play baseball in college at any level. I’m excited to develop and grow as a player.

VYPE: What advice would you give to younger players? JA: Set a goal for yourself and stay committed to it. Don’t let a tough season or a slump make you give up. Keep working hard, stay focused, and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it.
