Shooting a perfect ace, sophomore Luis Mantilla gets a team kill in the game Overwatch. As a core eSports player for three years, Mantilla has demonstrated leadership, growth, and skill on and off the game. He’s stuck to mainly Overwatch and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as his specialty games during his time.
“I helped to forward the eSports program at my middle school. I initially helped with equipment and decided to help grow the program. It helped to lay the groundwork for where I am today,” Mantilla said.
As of this season, Mantilla and his Overwatch team have gone undefeated and are headed for the state championship. With an undefeated record before their state game, Mantilla is a core member of the team and held his own in his role. On the other hand, his Smash Bros. record is also high, using the character, Captain Falcon.
“I play Cassidy on Overwatch. He applies intense damage, and getting kills is consistent with him. My role is damage, so I have to make sure I hold the line with my other damage and teammate, Noah. We both apply heavy pressure to the enemy,” Mantilla said.
Mantilla went to the state championship last year for Smash Bros., bringing valuable experience to this championship now. He sees the leadership role he has to fill as the class of ’25 graduates and picks up the reins on the team. He sets an example for others and plans to continue in the program for the next two years.
“eSports has played a significant role in my life. It’s taught me communication skills, how to perform under pressure and strategic thinking. I’ve been involved in helping build the program, and now I’m an active player. I would advise new players to stay dedicated, communicate well and not be afraid to be involved in eSports. It’s playing games with your friends at the end of the day,” Mantilla said.
