Westmoore’s McKenzie Jackson – Athletic Trainer Spotlight – Presented by Westmoore Family Dentistry

Westmoore’s McKenzie Jackson

For junior McKenzie Jackson, becoming an athletic trainer sparked an interest in her even before high school.

“I was in and out of the training room all throughout junior high and my freshman year,” she said. “Being there so often made me really want to be a part of the program.”

As a second-year trainer, Jackson has enjoyed the program so much that she knows she will continue participating up until her senior year. Jackson experienced first-hand what it was to be injured, she tore her labrum in her right shoulder and spent hours in the training room. This injury soon spiked an interest for her to help others just as she had been helped. “Being there all the time made me want to become a trainer myself,” Jackson said.

Along the way, Jackson met with someone she would become best friends with, senior Avery Mason.

“Avery and all the other student trainers make it so fun. They’re a huge part of why I love it so much,” Jackson said.

Jackson’s schedule varies depending on the day and season. At times you will see her in the Athletic training room, and others you will catch her on the sidelines. During practices, she and the other trainers make sure athletes stay hydrated and keep a close eye on potential injuries. On game days, she will pass out water, tape, and keep an eye out for a possible injury.

“We handle a lot of turf burns and cuts,” she explained. “We clean, dress, and take care of pretty much anything that pops up,” Jackson said.

Athletic training has taught Jackson a lot, but the most meaningful message yet has been “Just stop, take a deep breath, and address the situation,” Jackson said.

Even though she takes pride in her job and enjoys what she does, training comes with challenges.

“The most difficult part is the time management,” she admitted. “Between school, work, and training, I don’t get much free time. My favorite part is the bond I’ve made with all the other student trainers. They’ve become like a second family to me.”

Her dedication to the Moore Public Schools athletic training program has made her a recognizable face on and off the sidelines. Looking forward to her senior year, Jackson plans to continue growing in the training program.
