Westmoore’s Gunnar Reichman
For Westmoore High School sophomore Gunnar Reichman, cross country is more than a race against the clock. It is a daily commitment to preparation, patience and personal growth.
Reichman competes for the Jaguars’ varsity cross country program and has already built a list of performances that stand out. His performance at last season’s track regionals are among the accomplishments he values most.
“Going 10:13 in the 3200m at Track Regionals last year or going sub 16:30 at the Moore War 5k are the accomplishments I am most proud of,” Reichman said.
Those performances are the product of a mindset Reichman has developed through distance running. The sport demands consistency long before the starting gun goes off, and he has learned to appreciate the connection between training and results.
“This sport has taught me that you have to put in the work to have good results,” Reichman said.
Reichman has also grown as a racer. Earlier in his running career, he often started races too aggressively. Coaching has helped him learn how to control the early stages of a race and make smarter decisions as the competition unfolds.
“I would always go out too hot in races until my coach told me to hold off until I notice that the other person looks fatigued,” Reichman said.
Away from the course, Reichman draws inspiration from people who have made a lasting impact on his life. He credits youth leader Bobby Overturf for being a steady presence at track meets and for helping guide his faith.
“I am heavily inspired by my Youth Leader, Bobby Overturf. He was at every track meet of mine, and he has been with me and was brought Christ in my life, which led me to get baptized in July,” Reichman said.
Teammate Grady Carson has also been important to Reichman’s journey, providing accountability and friendship.
“I think my teammate, Grady Carson, as made the biggest impression. We are both strong brothers in Christ and he has kept me in check throughout the past years,” Reichman said.
As Reichman continues his sophomore season, he remains thankful for the support around him.
“I want to give a shoutout to all my family and coaches for believing in me throughout my running journey so far,” Reichman said.
