Moore West Junior High’s Brandon Lewis – Presented by Eskridge Honda

When Brandon Lewis first realized he wanted to mentor student-athletes as a coach, it was after making the decision to no longer play football.

“My first taste of coaching came when I was in college at Adams State University. After I decided to hang up my cleats, the coaches allowed me to stay around the team and help where needed. Moore West Junior High is the first coaching I’ve done while on staff at the school as well. I’ve loved every minute of it,” said Lewis.

Currently coaching 7th and 8th grade football, Lewis said he has modeled his coaching style after one of the greats.

“I looked at coach Sonny Feexico as a players’ coach. The type of man that will get onto the kids he’s coaching but will let you work through struggles. He’s why I give the players a voice in the huddles; it’s uplifting, and the players feel the trust factor that comes with that,” said Lewis.

Moore West Junior High School is a feeder school for Westmoore High School.

“The coaches there are attentive and provide plenty of support and resources for the coaches and kids,” Lewis said. “My favorite aspect of coaching is knowing that you are making a direct impact on the young girl or boy that you are working with. Giving them direction in the classroom and life is more of a win than anything that goes down in a scorebook.”

When players leave his program, Lewis said he hopes they do so as a better person.

“First and foremost, I hope they leave a better person. As for sports, I hope I was able to reach them in a way that their sports IQ is elevated, and they can process the game from many different angles,” said Lewis.

Lewis is a team member of the Functional Special Ed room, a position Lewis said he appreciates.

“I’m blessed enough to work with a bunch of exceptional kids and teachers.”

The former Norman High School graduate said being around sports is his comfort zone.

“Honestly, I’m a sports guy even if I’m not coaching. I’m supporting other sports in the school, watching college or professional games, or both,” said Lewis.
