Westmoore High School junior Jaxon Overton understands that progress in distance running comes through daily commitment. A member of the Jaguars’ varsity cross country program, Overton has embraced the discipline required to improve as an endurance athlete while finding inspiration from the people around him.
One of Overton’s proudest accomplishments came on the track last season. He exceeded his own expectations in the 1,600-meter run, posting a time that showed him what was possible through consistent effort.
“Last year I ran 4:49 in the 1600, which exceeded my expectations. I only expected to go sub 5 minutes.”
That breakthrough was not simply about a time on the clock. For Overton, running has become a source of personal growth and a way to develop habits that carry beyond races and practices.
“My sport has taught me discipline and dedication as an endurance athlete.”
Overton said Westmoore coach Reichert has been a major source of motivation. He appreciates the coach’s investment in the team and the example he sets through his passion for the sport.
“Someone who inspires me is Coach Reichert. He has shown to me how much he cares about the team and running and is very passionate about the sport. He wakes up very early to deal with his new baby and still comes to coach us at practice.”
He also credits former teammate Isaac Chavez, the team captain during Overton’s freshman season, for demonstrating what leadership and mentorship look like in a team setting.
“Isaac Chavez. He was the team captain my freshman year and a true mentor to me. He really showed how much he cared about running and the team.”
Overton draws confidence from a piece of scripture reflects his approach to competition and improvement.
“Everything is possible for one who believes. -Mark 9:23”
