Westmoore High School junior Camryn Newton approaches cross country with patience, positivity and a commitment to improving one run at a time.
Newton, who enjoys anatomy with teacher Mrs. Dailey, said learning how the body functions fits naturally with her interest in running. Away from school, she enjoys spending time with friends, watching movies and making trips to Dutch Bros with her mom. On the course, Newton finds joy in both the competitive and exploratory sides of the sport.
“I love to run on trails! I love feeling like I’m exploring! I also run for fun and for practice! I love what I do, and I want to be great at running and competing too!”
During the demanding stretches of a race, she returns to the work that has prepared her for the moment.
“My goals and how my training, hardworking, and patience will lead me to success.”
That outlook is shaped by the advice Newton has received about staying constructive in how she views herself and her training.
“To talk and have a positive mindset! How you talk about yourself and your training is how you will do! A positive mindset and attitude will lead you to succeed!”
Newton said professional runner Allie Ortransder provides an example of that resilient mindset.
“Allie Ortransder, she has gone through so many ups and downs, but never gives up on her dreams or goal! She keeps a positive mindset on her training and talks positively about herself!”
Her teammates are another important part of the experience. Newton values the closeness and encouragement within the Westmoore program, especially the relationships that turn training into lasting memories.
“All of the love and respect we all have for each other! We are all super close and want to support each others dreams and goals! I love being able to talk and make fun memories with my team, they are the best people! Stevie Martin, she is my best friend and has always been by my side. She encourages me and always cheers me on, she listens to me and is more than a teammate! Stevie is my best friend!”
